An Evidence-Led Product Discovery Audit for E-commerce
Product discovery is the system that helps a customer move from an incomplete need to a confident shortlist. An audit should therefore test how customers orient themselves, refine choices, recover from poor results and understand meaningful product differences.

Map discovery entry points
Review landing pages, categories, internal search, collections and direct product entries separately. Each begins with different context and should not be evaluated using one average conversion rate.
Test information scent
Category labels, filter names, result counts and product-card information should help customers predict what they will find. Ambiguous taxonomy increases unnecessary backtracking.
Analyse search behaviour
Review common queries, zero-result searches, refinements, exits and the relationship between search use and purchase. Search data often reveals customer vocabulary that catalogue teams do not use.
Prioritise by customer and commercial value
Combine behavioural frequency, customer impact, commercial relevance and implementation effort. A visible issue is not automatically the most valuable issue.
Practical checklist
- Review mobile and desktop journeys separately
- Test category labels with real customer language
- Inspect zero-result and low-result searches
- Compare product cards against buying questions
- Create a measured experiment backlog
